Big Sarge: Fishing & Boating Etiquette

This week, I'm not going to give you a fishing report. Instead, we're going to talk about some unwritten rules when it comes to launching a boat and fishing.

When you pull your boat up to the dock, be sure not to just park in front of it. That means anyone else who pulls up will not going to be able to put in their own boats. When you pull up to a ramp, go to the parking lot and get your equipment ready BEFORE you block the ramp.

If you run into another angler once you're out on the water, pay attention to their boat. If you notice he or she has a rope on the side with the trolling motor's down, that means you need to stay about 100 feet away from this boat. He's here, he's anchored down and he has staked claim to this piece of property right here to fish. Either wait for him or go 100 feet on the other side and try to fish.

When you're boating down the river or across the lake and you see a boat coming toward you, always steer toward the driver's side. Sometimes these boats go so fast, you need to know what to do without having to think a long time about it.

I hope this helps you out. There's three good scenarios I put out there for you -- launching your boat, anchoring your boat and what side to pass when you're on the water.

I'll see you next week!
