Free Checking is Going Away

By: Newsroom Solutions
Updated: September 26, 2011
Free checking appears to be going the way of the dinosaur.

Only 45-percent of non-interest bank checking accounts in the U.S. are free these days.

That's down from 65-percent last year and 76-percent two years ago.

Banks are adding fees to cover costs from new regulations that could cost them billions of dollars, according to a new survey from Bankrate.com.

The banking industry monitoring firm reports that more banks and thrifts could begin charging to use debit cards.
