Updated: September 20, 2011
Google and Visa are getting together so people with Visa cards can use their smartphones for store purchases.

Visa joins the "Google Wallet" project already supported by Citigroup, MasterCard, Sprint Nextel and First Data.

Since May the group has been running a trial system that lets shoppers store money on smartphones and pay at checkout.

The rival Isis system involving Verizon Wireless, AT&T and T-Mobile has signed partnerships with all the major credit card networks, including Visa and MasterCard.
