Updated: January 7, 2009
Len Yates testified before the Post Prison Transfer Board today to ask for clemency. Yates was convicted in 1998 of rape. Prosecutors say he would put Rohypnol in his dates drinks and then sexually assault them. He was sentenced to 35 years in prison. Yates made a statement to the media at the beginning of his hearing. "Foremost, I apologize to those I have offended. There isn`t a day that has gone by that I haven`t realized the gravity of the tragedy and pain that I have caused. I do not view the system or the ADC as my enemy. They have been an instrument of help. Today the board has a great burden of drawing the line between justice and mercy. I pray they will find mercy. I look forward to the day I can amend the harm that I`ve caused by being the person I should have been. Victims testified yesterday they fear for their safety. The board will make its decision public on March 1st.
