Sewer Water Treatment Plant Concerns

Updated: January 7, 2009
People who live around the top three sites for a new waste water treatment plant for West Little Rock say the plants shouldn`t be built near their homes. Monday night, Little Rock sewer committee members spent four hours meeting with concerned residents. They used a slide show to explain some of the state of the art features of the proposed plant. They say treatment tanks would be inside buildings, eliminating odor. They would use UV lights instead of chemicals to kill germs in the water. They would also make sure the area had a buffer zone so residents would not see the plant. People who live around the top three sites on the committee`s list say they still have concerns. They feel that even with odor elimination systems in place, the plant would still smell. They are also worried about decreased property values. People who live around the two sites in the county say those sites should be ruled out. They say since people in the county use septic tanks instead of city sewer lines, they are not part of the problem. They say the plant should not be in their neighborhood if their waste insn`t going there for treatment. People who live in The Ranch subdivision say the utility should find a site that isn`t close to any homes. That way people could chose to move close to the plant and not be forced to live near one. The committee did not vote on a site during their Monday night meeting. They are putting the vote on the agenda for their next meeting in April.
