As the Pine Bluff Arsenal moves to destroy its stockpile of chemical weapons, an order from the Secretary of Defense has some neighbors worried more could be on the way.
Seven other sites are set to destroy the Army`s stockpile, and while Pine Bluff is expected to be ready to incinerate its weapons by late February, some military officials worry other sites could have a hard time meeting the 2012 international deadline.
For that reason, the Army is considering whether some of the stockpile should be moved from other sites to places like Pine Bluff.
Safety activists already concerned with incinerating the existing stockpile say bringing in more only invites trouble.
Those supervising the process at Pine Bluff say studies need to be done before any decision is made. They also point to the early success of destroying the stockpile at other sites as evidence that the Army is taking the proper precautions and keeping neighbors safe.
