A new type of grapes has been created by researchers at the University of Arkansas.

A-2409 -- better known as "Witch Fingers" -- are a long, tubular selection first bred at the U of A Division of Agriculture Fruit Research Station in 1993. The project was abandoned in 2006 but a fruit breeder in California revived the program last year.

New York City's "Village Voice" blogged about them a few weeks ago, calling them "Fruit to Scare Children" -- just in time for Halloween. The "Voice" also included a photo showing the reddish-blue grapes in a grocer's display going for $7 a pound.
