In honor of National Rice Month, the industry today donated 30-thousand pounds of rice to the Arkansas Rice Depot in Little Rock.
Participating rice mills include: Cormier Rice Milling, Producers Rice Mill, Riceland Foods, Inc., Riviana Foods and Specialty Rice, Inc.
The Arkansas Rice Depot works with 600 hunger relief programs all across the state including food pantries, school food programs, disaster relief organizations, and a statewide hunger hotline.
"They're very glad to get it, they're in dire situations a lot of them," says Gayle Piddy with Helping Hand of Greater Little Rock.
Although the Arkansas rice industry has faced tough economic times from the high costs of production and the economic effects of unusual weather conditions, it is committed to giving back to the community by helping others.
Sponsored by the USA Rice Federation, National Rice Month is now in its 21st year. USA Rice Federation is the global advocate for all segments of the U.S. rice industry with a mission to promote and protect the interests of producers, millers, merchants and allied businesses.
Arkansas is the country's largest rice-growing state, producing nearly 9 billion pounds annually.
