Jail Overcrowding

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
The state prisons are full, which means inmates are backing up into county jails across the state. That`s causing problems for the county jails trying to house their prisoners. The Board of Corrections decided to release 791 inmates over the next 90 days. It`s something the board has done every 90 days since November of 1998. 581 inmates will be released up to 6 weeks earlier than scheduled. Another 206 inmates that are not violent and have good behavior records are going to be released up to a year early from state prision. County jailers hope once those prisoners are released, they will be able to move state inmates into state prisons. Right now 984 prisoners are in county jails waiting for transfer to a state prison.
