Updated: January 7, 2009
The Arkansas Health Department reports today that a human tested positive for West Nile virus in Drew County. There have been 25 cases of humans infected by the mosquito-borne West Nile virus reported in Arkansas this year. They were in these 18 counties: Ashley, Chicot, Craighead, Desha, Drew, Izard, Greene, Jefferson, Lonoke, Mississippi, Nevada, Ouachita, Phillips, Pope, Pulaski, Scott, Sebastian and Union. A-D-H reminds residents that West Nile is not usually deadly, except for the elderly and infirm. Nobody has died from the virus this year. But it can cause fever, muscle and joint aches, listlessness and, in the most severe cases, headaches that can lead to inflamation of the brain. The department asks everyone to protect themselves from the mosquito bites that can spread the virus.
