AG Supports Limiting Access To OTC Medicine

Updated: January 7, 2009
Attorney General Mike Beebe is throwing support behind a bill that would limit access to certain over-the-counter pills. The measure is based on similar legislation in Oklahoma that requires medicine containing pseudoephedrine to be placed behind the pharmacist`s counter. Pseudoephedrine, a powerful decongestant, is a key ingredient in meth production. Officials say the currentlaw, which limits the sale to consumers, has little effect. "People just go from one convenient store and retailer to another," says Attorney General Mike Beebe. The bill would prohibit the sale of pseudoephedrine-laced cold medicine at convenient stores. It would also require consumers show identification when purchasing the pills.
