Study: Heavy Fliers Raise Fuel Costs

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
Portly passengers are one reason airlines are spending millions on fuel, according to a new study. The Centers For Disease Control says the average weight of Americans increased by 10 pounds. That extra weight caused airlines to spend $275 million more in fuel in 2000. The study is a recent issue of the American Journal of Preventative Medicine. Southwest Airlines allows passengers to purchase an extra seat because of their excess weight. Other airlines have now enacted similar policies.
