Intersection Open Today Where Gas Fire Happened Monday

Traffic reopened today at a Little Rock
intersection that was the site of a major natural gas leak and a
spectacular fire yesterday.
The leak at Rodney Parham and Shackleford was sprung by a
construction crew toward the end of rush hour yesterday morning,
and the high-pressure line ignited shortly after the rupture. No
one was hurt.
The fire burned for about two hours, flames reached 30 feet up
and were hot enough to melt traffic signal lights and ruin the
asphalt on a section of roadway.
Firefighters sprayed water on the flames and worked as the
weather turned worse as rainstorms moved through.
The combination of the water from the fire hoses and a sudden
burst from the clouds was enough to put out the fire.
A Highway Department traffic count showed that 32 thousand cars
per day use the intersection.
