Updated: January 7, 2009
Mexico is planning to open a consulate office in Little Rock. It`s the first such office for the nation in Arkansas. The announcement by the counsel general Carlos Garcia de Alba noted that there is a growing Mexican population in Arkansas. The office will also serve Tulsa, Oklahoma City and Memphis, Tennessee. According to the United States Census Bureau, Arkansas` Hispanic population grew from 23,000 in 1992 to 97,000 in 2002. But de Alba says the state`s Hispanic population is probably closer to 200,000. Consulates provide diplomatic services to immigrants and foreign nationals. That includes help with lost passports, and travel and business visas. They also arrange cultural exchanges and provide legal services for immigrants.
