Arkansas Soldiers To Get Ballots For Elections

Court challenges and delays mean Arkansas soldiers in Iraq may have to rely on write-in ballots that don`t provide enough room for all the federal, state and local races. Soldiers with the Arkansas National Guard`s 39th Infantry Brigade at Camp Taji, Iraq, have received federal write-in ballots with spaces for seven contests. The Secretary of State`s Office and their staff judge advocate are encouraging them to write several races per line. The full absentee ballots haven`t arrived yet because the state Supreme Court didn`t decide until this week whether to allow independent candidate Ralph Nader`s name to appear on the presidential ballots. The state Democratic Party had challenged the manner in which Nader supporters gathered signatures to place him on the ballot. About half of the state`s counties are printing full ballots now, so most of the soldiers should still get them in time, but, for now, they must rely on the skimpy write-in documents.
