Ice business is hot in West Memphis

Updated: January 7, 2009
Hurricanes in Florida and a big fair in Tennessee enabled a West Memphis ice company set a production record during September. The company churned out more than 1.1 million pounds. Delta Ice Services sent 107, 737 pound bags of ice or 754,000 pounds to Florida. Another 352,000 pounds of ice went to the Mid-South Fair in Memphis, Tennessee. Owner Tommy Burns says the business was producing ice almost around the clock. Delta Ice has operated in the same location since the early 1930s, making it one of the oldest businesses in Arkansas at the same spot. The building initially housed the West Memphis water utility, which used to make ice on the side.
