Scam targeting Latino community

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
Attorney General Mike Beebe is suing a California company, alleging it is running a telemarketing scam aimed at Latino residents. He says F-G-H International called victims and told them they had been selected to receive help from the federal government. Victims were offered training programs to develop skills in automobile mechanics, computer proficiency and to improve English-language skills for Spanish-speaking applicants. They were told they would receive federal subsidies covering 80 percent of the training costs. The victims paid between 500 and 600 dollars for these "training programs," and the educational materials they received by mail were -- quote "very limited, outdated and essentially worthless." Beebe is seeking restitution for the victims, an injunction ending F-G-H International`s Arkansas operation and civil penalties under the Arkansas Deceptive Trade Practices Act.
