Garland Co School Election Ballot Will Remain

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
The Garland County Election Commission says the ballot for Tuesday`s school election can stay the same at least until a judge determines the county`s real tax rate. A proposed change to the property tax rate asks voters to approve a two-mill decrease, from 37.8 mills to 35.8 mills. But opponents say the current tax rate is actually 30.25 mills and the decrease is really a more than five-mill increase. The actual tax rate is the subject of a pending lawsuit, and the chairman of the election commission said that would have to be settled before the commission can agree to change the ballot question. If Circuit Judge David Switzer agrees with the complaint, he could order a rewritten ballot. A mill raises One dollar for every One housand dollars of assessed property.
