Powdery Substance Makes Scare in Conway

Updated: January 7, 2009
It was a tense afternoon for a Conway couple Wednesday afternoon, as authorities investigated what was thought to be a powdery white substance in an envelope. Larry and Anita Jones checked their mail around 11 a.m. Wednesday morning. Anita Jones says she noticed a white cloud of a substance coming from an envelope she had opened from Haiti. When they took it to the police department, the couple was decontaminated and the area was blocked off. Everything was reopened when the state department of health tested the envelop and found no substance. "What this event did, is it gave us the opportunity to actually test those procedures that we have in place by policy and allow us to critique those procedures," says Lt. Danny Moody, Conway Police Department. There was some speculation that what Anita Jones saw in the envelope was paper residue. "And because of the times we live in, I immediately called the police department," said Larry Jones. Meanwhile, police remind the public, rather than bringing potentially hazardous materials to the police deparment, dial 911, and allow them to come to you.
