Thief installs fake bank box

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
A thief installed a fake night deposit box at a Fort Smith bank over the weekend, and police say the culprit made off with after-hours deposits. The phony deposit box was placed over the real one, and some customers were fooled over the Labor Day holiday weekend. The scam is new to Fort Smith, but it has been tried elsewhere. Surveillance video shows the thief putting his fake deposit box in place at a Simmons First branch. Over the next 24 hours, the suspect went back to the bank several times to empty the box of deposits. Police say people should use caution. In late July, Eureka Springs police investigated a similar crime at a bank there. The departments are working to determine whether the cases are connected.
