A refurbishment of the state Capitol should be finished by October. The work will fix crumbling sidewalks, restore monuments and add new lighting. Work began in May on the one point three million dollar project. Secretary of State Charlie Daniels is in charge of the state Capitol`s upkeep. He said the project is aimed at returning the building to its original look. Crews were careful not to damage a massive willow tree when they were digging to install the sidewalks. At another spot on the Capitol grounds, a couple of magnolia trees had to be removed. Two grants from the state Natural and Cultural Resources Council are funding the project. The Arkansas Capitol was built in 1915. A state prison previously was on the site.
