Soldier With Arkansas Ties Dies In Iraq

A tank platoon leader who spent part of his childhood in Carroll County has died in Iraq, was killed in Iraq when a gunman climbed on top of his tank and fired into its open hatch. The description of the death comes from the father of Second Lieutenant James Michael Goins. Goins died Sunday at age 23. He lived in Bonner Springs, Kansas. Goins` parents live north of Green Forest, Arkansas, in the community of Oak Grove. His father says his son was "born to be a soldier." Goins was assigned to the Army`s 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division from Fort Hood, Texas. His wife and high school sweetheart, Paula Goins, says her husband had a standing order at a florist to send her lilies or daisies at the first of each month and on special occasions. They were married August fourth, 2001.
