About 175 people are in Fort Smith to hear Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards speak at a town hall-style meeting. Edwards speech focused on jobs and health care. He says Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry would give tax credits to keep businesses from exporting jobs. Edwards says Kerry would do more to provide health care to families and would help small businesses provide health care for
workers. The visit was Edwards` second in two weeks to Arkansas. Kerry-Edwards supporters at the meeting say the Democrats can gather support in the traditionally Republican area of Arkansas. The state Democratic Party says members of the audience were admitted on a first-come, first-served basis. Governor Huckabee issued a statement today criticizing Edwards.
Huckabee, a Republican and a supporter of President Bush, says the Kerry-Edwards ticket is the most liberal since George McGovern was the Democratic nominee in 1972.
