Man Convicted Of Killing Police Officer Applies For Clemency

Updated: January 7, 2009
A man convicted of killing a Texarkana police officer 27 years ago says that he is rehabilitated and has applied for clemency. John Lohbauer was 15 years old when he was convicted of killing Lieutenant Ed Worrell and wounding another officer in an ambush outside of a Texarkana store in 1977. Worrell was 28 and had two children and a wife when he died. His third baby was born after his death. Lohbauer is 43 years old now and serving a life sentence plus 40 years. Officials say that Lohbauer`s petition should be reviewed by the Arkansas Post Prison Transfer Board this September after two hearings. The board will make a recommendation to Governor Huckabee, who will make the final decision. Texarkana police officers says that they hope Huckabee will deny the application. Lohbauer`s petition comes after Huckabee issued a statement saying that he thinks the state`s clemency system needs a rehaul.
