Juvenile Detention Center Closing

Friday is the last day the White River
Regional Juvenile Detention Center will be operating in Batesville. Officials say that the unit will have to close because the ten counties it serves did not contribute enough to meet payroll and other expenses, including pricey insurance premiums. The unit holds juveniles placed there by the Division of Youth Services. Independence County Judge David Wyatt said he plans to meet with the head of Division of Youth Services to see what his options are.
Wyatt said juveniles currently housed at Batesville will be sent to other facilities. It covers a ten-county area in northeastern and north central
Arkansas, including Cleburne, Fulton, Independence, Izard, Jackson, Sharp, Stone, Van Buren, White and Woodruff counties.
