Clemency Changes Ahead

Updated: January 7, 2009
The chairman of Arkansas` parole board says big changes are in store for the state`s clemency process. The board met Thursday for the first time since Governor Huckabee announced earlier this week his plan to revamp the clemency system. Huckabee wants more thorough investigations of inmate files and better notification of victim families during the clemency review process. Prosecutors have criticized the governor for what they call a liberal clemency policy and for his decision to approve clemency for murderers and rapists. Post Prison Transfer Board chairman Leroy Brownlee said Thursday morning the board is looking into Huckabee`s proposal and will have a better idea of its impact by early next week. Brownlee says he expects the panel will hold a special meeting next week to discuss the governor`s proposals.
