Arkansas Farmers Still Fighting

By: Import User
Updated: January 7, 2009
Five years after their discrimination suit was settled, thousands of black farmers say the federal government still owes them money. In 1999, the settlement with the USDA left thousands of black farmers with the promise of a $50,000 payout. A new report argues that many farmers who deserve the money are still waiting. Officials with the USDA disagree and say, if anything, the federal government has gone above and beyond the terms of the settlement to meet the needs of minority farmers. The report estimates that 700 Arkansas farmers have not received money from the settlement.
