UAMS May Build New Hospital And Dorms

Updated: January 7, 2009
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is planning a $169 million dollar construction project. On Tuesday, the executive council discussed plans to replace much of the Little Rock medical center and a 207 room dormitory. The project also includes a parking lot and a power plant. If approved, the project would likely be the largest in UAMS history. The plans are preliminary but the new building will have at least as many beds as the hospital`s current 230. It will be another three or four months before hospital officials know whether the bed capacity will be expanded. The existing hospital is 50 years old and officials say the structure is no longer efficient. The project`s concept and the possibility of issuing bonds for it are scheduled for discussion at the University of Arkansas board of trustees meeting August fourth in Bentonville.
