An Arkansas Air National Guard unit based at
the Fort Smith airport could lose the F-16 fighter jets it flies if
a proposed new strategic plan is put into place. Officials say a
new mission for the unit could include different aircraft.
Members of the 188th Fighter Wing were told of the proposed
strategic plan Wednesday by Major General Don Morrow, adjutant
general of the Arkansas National Guard. But no firm plan is in
place yet.
The Air Force plans to replace the aging F-16s with either the
new F-22 fighter or the even newer F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. But,
the Vanguard plan has not been approved by Congress and has not
been funded.
