Pryor, Lincoln Against Gay Marriage But Both Help Block Federal Amendment

Updated: January 7, 2009
Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor say they each personally oppose same-sex marriage. But the two Democrats voted yesterday to block progress of a federal marriage amendment in Congress. Lincoln and Pryor said it should be up to the states to take action on making gay marriage illegal rather than through the U-S Constitution. Pryor says he intends to vote for a ballot question in Arkansas this November that would amend the state constitution to ban gay marriage and prohibit civil unions. Arkansas already has a state law that bans gay marriages. Lincoln has said she stands by Arkansas` ban on gay marriage and her Christian beliefs dictate that marriage is a sacred bond between a man and a woman.
