Jonesboro Plant Closing

Updated: January 7, 2009
The Haworth office furniture plant in Jonesboro is to close its doors, putting 230 people out of work. The closure is to be complete by the end of the year. The company says it is consolidating operations to its home state of Michigan. Haworth says shipments of office furniture have dropped 40 percent from 2000 to 2003. The company opened its Jonesboro factory in 1998. The company will provide assistance to employees in Jonesboro, including severance packages, unemployment benefits, and the option of continuing health insurance. Haworth officials say the Jonesboro plant was successful and its workers are good, but demand for the product has dropped too much. The company is also closing plants in Henderson, Texas; Hazelton, Pennsylvania; and Lincolnton, North Carolina.
