Conservationists and state officials are studying results of a trip to the 70 mile long Strawberry River and its tributaries. The Nature Conservancy, a national conservation group, and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission joined to gather details about fish species in the eastern Ozarks. What they find will tell a lot about the condition of the water. The group collected fish by shocking the water with electricity, a procedure that harms or kills relatively few fish. The Strawberry River is one of the most aquatically rich systems in the state. More than half of the native fish species in Arkansas are found there. Most of the fish found during the sampling were identified on the spot. However, several were taken to be identified later.
