The Humane Society of Marion County is seeking to build a shelter for 40 malnourished dogs rescued from a home
near Lead Hill. Kim Johnson, attorney for humane society, said the dogs were
owned by an elderly woman who was cooperating with authorities. The Marion County Sheriff`s Department learned of the conditions last week after receiving a phone tip. Johnson said some animals at the residence had died from starvation. None were given food, and the animals drank water that
drained off the roof into plastic bowls. Johnson said there was no electricity or water at the home. The humane society, which is run by volunteers, hopes to raise 50-thousand dollars for a no-kill shelter. Meanwhile, the organization is offering to pay vet costs for those who want to
adopt the rescued dogs.
