Olympic marathon gold medalist Joan Benoit
Samuelson received honors from Governor Huckabee this morning at a
running store in Little Rock.
Samuelson won the first women`s Olympic marathon in 1984. She
qualified for this year`s Olympic race as well, but said that she
will sit it out because of an achilles tendon injury. Samuelson is
in town to run tomorrow`s Firecracker 5k race. She is one in
a string of famous runners to compete in the race, including Bill
Rogers, Frank Shorter and course record holder Reuben Reina. Reina
finished the three mile course in 13 minutes and 26 seconds.
Huckabee presented Samuelson with an Arkansas Traveler
certificate. The governor took some tips from her. He plans to run
tomorrow morning as well.
