Three people have died of rabies after receiving
infected organs from the same Arkansas donor.
The government today announced those are the first documented
cases of rabies being spread through organ transplants.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta says
lungs, kidneys and the liver of an Arkansas man who died in May
were donated to four patients.
The donor, who died of a brain hemorrhage, did not show symptoms
of rabies.
CDC says three organ recipients died of rabies.
They included two patients in Texas who received the donor`s
kidneys and a liver recipient in Oklahoma.
An Alabama patient who received the donor`s lungs also died, but
from complications during surgery.
Authorities are trying to determine if others who had contact
with the organ recipients or the donor need post-exposure treatment
for rabies.
