A federal prosecutor says a former Earle
alderman violated the trust of absentee voters who provided him
with their ballots to deliver to polling places.
Lee Johnson is accused of altering absentee ballots that he and
unnamed conspirators were delegated to deliver by other voters in
the 2002 general election. His trial in US District Court in
Little Rock is to continue today.
Johnson was indicted by a federal grand jury on two counts of
conspiracy and making false declarations, and one count each of
voting more than once and procuring false ballots.
Prosecutors told jurors that Johnson and others abused their
powers as "bearers" of absentee ballots that they were allowed to
deliver. The ballots were allegedly altered.
