Pope County is among the jurisdictions in Arkansas acting on a new state law that allow a greater number of people to be called for potential jury service. The Legislature has moved to allow courts to not only draw on registered voters but also on licensed drivers when calling potential jurors to court. Judges in Pope County are considering the mechanisms by which they could begin calling licensed drivers to court. The judicial district will first look at whether using the voter lists alone provides an appropriate cross section of members of the community. Judges have until October first to decide if they want the change, which would take place on January first, 2005.
