Hammer, a six-year-old capybara at the
Little Rock Zoo, is dead.
Zoo officials say the rodent was euthanized after lab tests showed that it had a degenerative spinal cord lesion. Hammer had been under vet care since she developed trouble walking in early May.
Zoo curator Debbie Thompson said Hammer was put down May 20th.
Hammer was considered middle age for a capybara. Life expectancy in captivity is about 11 years.
The Little Rock Zoo is home to three other capybaras: Hammer`s sister, Jaws, also six year old; and two 13-year-olds named Scuba and Flipper.
