The 24-mile Arkansas River Trail in Little
Rock and North Little Rock is about half complete.
The Headwaters Partnership gave a progress report Monday, saying
that twelve and one-half miles are still to come of the $18 million dollar paved trail. On the south side of the river, the
trail will eventually stretch from Pinnacle Mountain State Park
west of Little Rock, through the city to the Clinton Library east
of downtown. The trail will move across the river through North
Little Rock and back out west to Cooks Landing, near the Interstate
430 bridge.
The project has been driven by Headwaters, a cooperative of 27
organizations that promote health, fitness, parks and tourism in
Arkansas.
The trail is complete from east of Two Rivers park to the east
edge of Rebsamen Park in Little Rock. Aside from bridges, the trail
is finished on North Little Rock`s side. The Army Corps of
Engineers plans to build a pedestrian bridge across the river from
Rebsamen Park to Cooks Landing. Little Rock`s downtown section of
the trail should be finished by 2005.
