State Correction Department officials say an inmate who tried to walk away from a work program in Benton yesterday is being transferred to maximum security. Spokeswoman Dina Tyler says James Christen was caught in Marion County as he tried to cross into Missouri on a ferry. Tyler says the 42-year-old inmate has been in and out of jail on nonviolent charges since 1980. Christen was serving 60 days for a parole violation for burglary and theft convictions out of Boone County. Tyler says Christen began serving the 60-day program on May seventh. Christen was working as a porter at the Benton Services Center and ran away as he and two other inmates walked from their jobs to where they are housed. Tyler says the other inmates reported the escape.
