Opening statements are to be held today in the capital murder case of a Little Rock woman accused of slaying her mother. Leslie MacKool`s husband, Michael MacKool, is also charged with capital murder, but is to be tried separately. Jury selection was completed yesterday. Prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty against Leslie MacKool, who is 27. She is accused of stabbing Janie Ballard in September. She told investigators that her husband ordered her to kill Ballard over an inheritance dispute. Leslie MacKool has pleaded innocent by mental disease or defect. If convicted of capital murder, she would face a sentence of life in prison without parole. Prosecutors have not waived the death penalty against 50-year-old Michael MacKool, who is to be tried June 14th.
