High court hears plea from school districts in final arguments

The state Supreme Court heard a variety of arguments today when it gave parties in the school funding lawsuit a final chance to state their views.
Lawyers for the Lake View School District -- which initially sued the state over funding levels -- praised the Legislature`s efforts to improve education. But the lawyers say the state has not done enough.
A lawyer for the Little Rock School District argued that the Legislature did not go far enough in expanding preschool programs. Governor Huckabee`s lawyer contended that more consolidation is needed to fulfill a requirement for substantially equal curricula, teacher pay and facilities.
Lawyers for some school districts asked the high court to retain
jurisdiction over Arkansas` long-running school funding case at least until the end of the next school year. That would keep the court involved through the end of next year`s legislative session.
