Updated: January 7, 2009
The state has cited a Benton nursing home for violating federal rules after a mental patient died there last month when she was run over by a nursing home bus. Mary Knight died April 20th at Arkansas Health Center after she apparently lied on the ground near the left rear tire of the bus when the driver put it in reverse. State regulators say the woman may have been trying to commit suicide. According to police reports, Knight was overheard saying, quote "I just want to die," the day before the incident. The report stated that Knight suffered from dementia, bipolar disorder and alcohol dependence. It also stated that health center employees didn`t monitor or implement preventative measures. The state`s Office of Long Term Care issued a letter along with its report stating that the health center`s Medicaid funding could be cut off if the problems continue past June 30th.
