Updated: January 7, 2009
Governor Huckabee announced today that he has asked Colonel Steve Dozier to assume day-to-day command of the Arkansas State Police. Dozier will temporarily replace Don Melton, who announced his retirement yesterday. Huckabee said that he has full confidence in Dozier. The governor also said that he will consult with the other state police commissioners and hopefully be able to name a new director soon. Melton leaves on June 20th -- three years to the day after being sworn in. Don Melton told employees at state police headquarters yesterday about his departure. He said that he was resigning to take advantage of personal and family opportunities. He did not elaborate.
