UA chancellor John White testified during
former basketball coach Nolan Richardson`s this morning that he
used a racial slur once when he was a child. Richardson`s attorney
John Walker was attempting to show that the university
discriminated against Richardson.
White said he used the n-word at about age four and was punished
by his mother. He said he didn`t use the word again.
Walker produced a pair of letters, one from state Senator Irma
Hunter Brown and one that was a response from White, both in regard
to a speech White made on March second before legislators.
Walker said White used the phrase quote "let`s put this tar
baby to rest" during his talk. The context of the comment wasn`t
explained in court, but Brown wrote White to tell him she was
offended. White wrote back and apologized for offending her.
University attorney Phil Kaplan said the dictionary definition
of "tar baby" as "a delicate situation from which one cannot
extricate oneself."
