University of Arkansas athletic director Frank Broyles testified today that he considered firing Nolan
Richardson two years before the basketball coach was actually given
his walking papers.
Broyles said he reconsidered after Richardson`s team won four games in four days at the 2000 Southeastern Conference tournament and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Testimony got underway today in Richardson`s discrimination suit
against the university.
Richardson`s lawyer didn`t make an opening statement, sticking instead to pre-trial court papers that said the coach was fired because he is black and outspoken.
University lawyer Phil Kaplan said the suit is over money and Richardson`s hatred for Broyles.
Richardson was fired in 2002.
