Johnson County Under Water; Residents Evacuated

Updated: January 7, 2009
More than 20 families were evacuated from Johnson County after flood waters crested near their homes. Neighbors were forced to navigate their quiet Elm Street block in boats as dogs climbed on top of their doghouse to escape the water. "This is the worst I`ve ever seen," says Margaret Morrison, a 22-year resident of Elm Street. "I was just terrified. I didn`t know what to do." Morrison`s grandson dug a 10-foot long ditch in her backyard so the water could drain. She plans to return to her home Saturday night. The Arkansas Department of Emergency Management says it`s monitoring the situation and will offer help where needed. Officials are asking neighbors to stay out of low-lying areas and not to drive through standing water.
