Survivors of crime victims are lending their
support to a drive to change the laws governing executive clemency
in Arkansas.
On the Capitol steps today, Saline County Prosecutor Robert
Herzfeld presented a draft proposal he wants to get before the
Legislature next year requiring the state to further open the
clemency process to the public and requiring the governor to give
reasons for granting clemency to criminals.
Brandie Jones of Benton is the granddaughter of a murder victim
whose killer -- Don Jeffers -- was granted clemency by Governor
Huckabee, only to have the clemency blocked. Jones says the law
needs to be changed and says she`s willing to be a representative
for families who cannot lobby the Legislature to make it happen.
