Crittenden County officials are upset at the
Environmental Protection Agency`s decision to put restrictions on
the county because of poor air quality. They blame the pollution
levels on nearby DeSoto County, Mississippi, which was NOT cited
for pollution.
Eddie Brawley, director of the Crittenden County Metropolitan
Planning Organization, says the Memphis suburb has twice the impact
on air quality as Crittenden County. He says the Mississippi county
has more than twice as many households, almost three times as many
vehicles, four times the number of commuters and almost double the
amount of emissions.
Three counties in the Memphis Metropolitan Statistical Area --
Crittenden and DeSoto counties and Shelby County, Tennessee -- have
been working for five years to cut emissions.
Kay Brockwell, Marion`s director of Economic Development, said
the effort has already hurt business recruitment because new
industrial plants must meet a higher standard for emissions.
