A program run by the Arkansas Rice Depot has quietly been feeding hungry children statewide for nearly a decade.
The Food For Kids Program is now in 339 schools and feeds about 12,000 children each year. It started in 1995 after local school officials contacted the depot.
"We quickly realized a lot of children came from homes where parents weren`t feeding them," said Allison Stroud, director of the Food For Kids program.
Stroud says most of the kids are neglected by their parents because of rampant drug use. Others have been laid off because of the tight economy.
The program relies on food donations from local companies and the public.
